Creating a Relaxing Bedroom Retreat
Pressure-free bedrooms help assure a satisfying night’s sleep — soft tints, natural fabrics, and comfortable accessories all contribute to an atmosphere of deep relaxation and calm.
Small changes can make a big difference. Adding calming colours, natural elements and stimulating smells; reducing clutter and making good use of shelves and storage; adding familiar reminders of the people and things you love – all these contribute to turning your bedroom into your own haven of peace.
Create a Cozy Reading Nook
Every book-lover dreams of having a cosy reading corner in our house, but sometimes reality gets in the way, and we don’t have enough square footage, but that doesn’t mean your contentment is over – any corner or alcove, or even an empty window seat can be turned into your own personal reading nook!
However, no cosy reading corner would be complete without a good chair and side table where you can place your cup of tea or coffee, but adding a throw blanket or throw pillows can make your reading area feel more inviting, and even help you personalise your space by giving yourself the opportunity to express yourself visually while you read.
Make a bed for reading without taking up space in your bedroom by building a nook with shelves, floor cushions and cosy equipment.
Add Personal Touches
As you build out that peaceful sanctuary you’re crafting for your bedroom, incorporate elements that are reflective of your unique style in order to feelmost intimate for you; things like a vase of flowers, a candle or two, a throw or blanket laid across the bed or a Himalayan salt lamp. These are all easy ways to turn any space into a relaxing area.
Bring nature indoors by placing serene landscapes or botanical prints, decorative hangings that remind you of the natural world, and furniture made from natural materials, such as wood and stone (helpful for indoor air quality). Consider adding indoor plants as well (because they improve indoor air quality), as well as a diffuser full of essential oils (another scent stimulus).
With clever bedroom design and buying the furniture that supports your aims, you can create a relaxing space that will make you feel good, throughout the year. Allow Avanti Furniture to help you transform your bedroom into a place where you’ll look forward to resting your head.
Create a Clutter-Free Space
A bedroom is a place for privacy and sleep, not for clutter, so keep it free from piles of laundry, toys that don’t belong to your kids, exercise bikes and machines from other parts of the house, and electronics. Put all this stuff away in closets or storage solutions for out-of-view use.
It’s also important to keep your nightstand free of clutter. Limit your things to nightlights, books and water glasses – but even those I recommend to be tamed with bedside organisers/trays. Tuck your cords into them. Speaking of light, don’t forget to add dimmable lighting sources: they’re essential for creating a relaxed space. For example, dimmable table lamps with dimmer switches can create the kind of ambience we want in our bedroom retreat. Prefer table or floor lamps versus overhead fixtures, and opt for those with dimmable switches if possible. If your bedroom is too large, add wall sconces or a pendant light. Always choose dimmable bulbs for your fixtures. Remember, you can tailor your lighting all day long to be uplifting and energetic, then have that option with dimmers to make your space moody and atmospheric for rest and relaxation. A hypoallergenic, scent-free bedroom retreat will promote a good night’s sleep.
Invest in Comfortable Furniture
Apart from being a bed to rest your head at night, your bedroom has the potential to be a place of rest and calm where you can escape at the very least. By choosing soft calming colours, investing in soft or plush textiles and hanging some wall hangings (and pictures) to personalise it more, the bedroom can truly become your ultimate haven.
Buy comfortable chairs, armchairs, or even a small seating area. If that’s not an option, do your best to create an inviting reading nook with comfy chairs or an armchair and cosy accent pillows. Striking storage ottomans or benches offer a place to rest feet and add artful objets d’art; they also double as places to stow blankets and linens.
It doesn’t have to be a hugely expensive undertaking to turn your bedroom into a perfect retreat. With some clever organisational techniques, a few daily maintenance habits, a careful dosing of activity zones and some design principles of minimalism, your bedroom can become a sleep sanctuary perfect for restful slumber, relaxation and a place you can finally call your oasis.
